Catherine (Kate) Capewell was born under a different surname to the one currently displayed. This is her married name, and the one she has been published under. Kate grew up on the south coast of Western Australia, also known as the Rainbow Coast. Life was simple when she was small, as life is simple for most children when they are small. We don’t realise our childhood may have been more difficult than others, or easier, until we grow up — and then it’s our choice how we choose to remember it. Kate remembers hers as being simple, and wild, and full of salty air from the ocean.

Periwinkle farming in rockpools is something every child should have the opportunity to do. If there isn’t an opportunity to have rockpools, or periwinkles, then sandholes, sticks, moss and houses made of grevillea are just as good.
